English translation :-
You are in the silent crevices of my heart,
my beloved-
like the blissful moonlight
of a full moon night.
Settled in my heart
ever so quietly.
You shall fill my youth
and my world alike
with pride
like the ever so fulfilling
moonlit night.
Oh my beloved, you are
in the silent crevices of my heart.
Your compassionate eyes
shall stay awake
to cover me
in their serene shade.
You shall fill my agonies and pain
dreams and desires alike
with your honor and pride
much like the ever so blissful
moonlit night.
You shall stay in the silent crevices
of my heart,
ever so quietly.
P.S :- The translation might not be up to the mark. However, it was just an honest endeavor by me. Constructive suggestions much awaited :)
Good job kiddo. I don't understand Bengoli very well but can easily see your words realting to them :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome :)

ReplyDeleteA very good effort. What made you learn Bengali? Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful.. I listened to the song rendered by Shaan & followed ur lyrics translation.. It was falling in place perfectly.. Good work. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with this mesmeric song the first time I heard it. Not only this song, the rest of the Bengali (Rabindra Sangeet ) songs sung by Shaan are one of my favourites. Pranam to Guru Dev Tagoreji and his legacy.
DeleteHeartfelt thanks to you for taking your precious time and effort to translate it, otherwise non speaking Bengali song lovers will not be able to know the meaning, hence unable to experience the essence of the poem.
Dear sir
DeletePlz listen the same version of kabir suman
Fantastic. One of my favourite song, now got the English translation too. Keep it up..
ReplyDeleteBangla kotha gulo onek kothin ebong sundor oi english translation er theke... By the way good try... :) Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteWonderful song. I do not like the visual though - sorry, such poor acting from the legend of bengali cinema -- Manna Dey has actually regretted that this legendary actor would often so callously picturise the high octave part of a song as effortlessly as any other, losing its impact altogether!
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, the song is superb of course and thanks for uploading.
IMHO, in the translation I would cut out the "crevices" please.... a prosaic word (and never appears in the poem) - may be something like:
You stay, silently
in my heart
In this joyful shy moonlit
anchoring night...
You stay, silently
in my heart...
Tagore actually says you 'will' stay...etc, but that sense is poorly translated with 'will' I know, yet it needs to connect with the rest of the poem.... that : you will fill my heart, my world, my life.. with the radiance of your love and joy.
Tagore always looked to the future with undiluted hope for the joy life brings, he transcends (and lifts) personal love to the everlasting...
An interesting thing I see here also is that Shakespeare calls the moon 'inconstant' when comparing woman to the "inconstant moon" - technically accurate, as the moon waxes and wanes - and he relates it to the cycles of a woman's moods - how true and scientific! And yet, here as elsewhere, Tagore calls the moon full of silent joy the stable anchoring (everlasting?) glow of life's love. I suppose the cycle of life, of the universe, has been the basis of Indian thought - small surprise then that so much of eastern thinking is rooted in a cyclical and stable wonder, no surprise the zero was invented in the east...
Thanks for the post
Silent, you remain
ReplyDeletein my heart.
secretly, deeply, moonlit
like a night.
My life, my youth
My whole world
You will fill with pride
like a night.
Silent, you remain
in my heart.
Will awake alone
your melancholic eyes
your fringe of sari
will offer me shade
My sadness and weariness
My hopes and dreams
You will fill with fragrance
like a night
Silent, you remain
in my heart.
secretly, deeply, moonlit
like a night.
Good work done, by this way more people will love Rabindra sangeet ....thanks
